Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don

Stem and Leaf: Leafy branches in remedy to cure inhibited menstruation.

Leaf: Infusion or decoction used for hypertension, diabetes control, dropsy, cleansing the blood, and for a cholagogue and aperitif (appetite stimulant). Used to treat urinary tract ailments in NW Guyana.

Flower: Infusion for mild diabetes

Origin: Native to Madagascar. Cultivated or naturalised in all tropical countries.

Pharmacological Activities: Anticancer/ Antineoplastic, Antioxidant, Antiangiogenic, Chemopreventive, Hypoglycaemic and Wound healing.

Range. Endemic to Madagascar (endangered), but cultivated and naturalized throughout the tropics of both hemispheres, sometimes extending to the subtropics. Found growing naturally around Myanmar; also cultivated.

Uses. This plant is known for neutralizing poisons, facilitating digestion, and pro­moting weight gain.

Whole plant: Used to treat diabetes. A boiled water extract of the five parts used to treat diabetes.

Leaf: Drinking the aqueous extract of leaves alleviates hemor-rhaging during menstruation.

Origin:
Commonly grown in Indian gardens.

Action:
The cytotoxic dimeric alkaloids, present in Madagascar Periwinkle, Catharanthus roseus L. Don, Vincea rosea L., and used for the treatment of certain type of cancer, have not been found in V. major.
